![]() ![]() Because Charlie and Alice so often exactly reflect Dubya and Laura, a tension develops when a certain detail - an abortion - is not immediately recognisable or verifiable. This combination of the looked-up and the made-up within a single narrative is a recurrent controversy of this genre of faction. Yet, in other respects, this topical simulacram diverges from the biographical model: Princeton rather than Yale, money from meat rather than oil, a father who was a state governor rather than a former president. ![]() Charlie too is elected by a Supreme Court decision. As Charlie goofs around the White House, joking about the impending merger between General Electric and Alitalia - "They're going to call the company Genitalia!" - the reader sees and hears George W Bush. ![]()

![]() ![]() We swapped accounts on the condition that no message could be sent without the explicit approval of its real owner - this was a quest to understand the inner workings of the platform, not dupe people. We embarked on our great switcheroo in an attempt to get to the bottom of what makes Tinder tick, customizing each other’s profiles to what we thought people of our gender wanted, releasing those accounts into the wild, and then comparing the results to our past luck. And while Jessica didn’t really need the help, I took over her account as well. ![]() I handed over my account to my colleague, Jessica Misener, on a hunch (correct) that I wasn’t doing things right on Tinder. And I was using Tinder’s on-staff sociologist’s input to refine my approach. My Tinder messages were being composed by a woman who also set up my profile. I began to understand my matches in a way I hadn’t previously, but not because of anything I'd done. Previously stalled discussions were suddenly revived and I was right-swiped with increasing frequency. I used to be terrible at Tinder - but for a few weeks this summer, I was pretty good. ![]() ![]() The Sentinel is a short story only 11 pages long by British author Arthur C. I thought it was a pretty strong way to end Thia’s story. This book surprised me, in the fact that I really liked it. I honestly wasn’t entirely sure I was going to read this book, but then I got approved for it on NetGalley. I wasn’t necessarily impressed to say the least. You can read my whole, non-spoiler thoughts here, but the gist was that it felt like a typical YA “take back the throne” fantasy and I couldn’t stop comping it to Eragon. ![]() I read The Storm Crow last year, and thought it was okay. For example, the rhyme "THREE TREE / Three fish in a tree / Fish in a tree? / How can that be?" is brought to life with a trio of plump, self-satisfied fish perched atop globular branches as two stymied hybrid dog-rabbit-humanoids look on in consternation. This popular series combined engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. ![]() In contrast, the illustrations here are wild and wonderful, and the accompanying language, while simple, is delightfully silly. But what was radical about this little book at the time of publication (and what makes it still compelling today) is Seuss's departure from the traditionally dull pictures and sentences used in reading primers. Words and images in the poem are often repeated, punctuation marks, required by grammar rules, are ignored – there is no place and time for them in the animal life of Harlem inhabitants. Drugs, casual sex, hopelessness and the desire to take everything life has to offer without giving anything in return… This phantasmagoric, from the point of view of common people, whirl is presented as the only possible reality, the reality in which hundreds people live. It’s a cry of a person and many persons who are going through never-ending attacks at their consciousness, their minds, and their bodies. Due to this, Ginsberg’s work acquires a revolutionary quality, which perfectly matches its name.
